When the owners of this winter chalet in Switzerland approached Kelly Hoppen, what they wanted was an elegant and homely space with her famous stamp on it. And what we see is typical Hoppen magic all the way. So did it make things easy for the acclaimed designer? Guess not. How does one use the same philosophy and come up with totaly unique, scintillating results each time? How does one create beauty and interest with tune-on-tone lasering and subtle contrasts in textures? That’s a master class only the queen of neutral palette can offer.
My signature style is a neutral colour palette, ultra-luxu-rious materials, clean elegant design with the utmost comfort in mind. The chalet very much builds upon my signaure design style, and I worked with the clients to add my style to their personality, lifestyle and wishes far the properts,’ says Hoppen.
So you find Hoppen’s favourite white, cream, grey, taupe and beige in abundance as luxe layers and rich tones in this chalet that was originally two separate apartments. The furniture is a distinguished combination of classic curves and moderm straight lines.
Patterned wallpaper and small accents of dusty pink and emerald green give the traditional property a modern twist. The magic lies in the subtle contrasts, careful layering and attention to detail.
The grand entrance with a series of glamorous chandeliers and wall lights sets the right tone for the luxe interiors. The art deco panelled walls add depth and richness to the scheme.
Keeping in mind its setting. Hoppen uses a lot of natural materials including wood, linens, marble and coral that aceentuate the chalet’s rustic charm.
I always take inspiration from a property’s surroundings and bring elements from the outside into the design. The natural
stunning Swiss backdrop was so inspiring, that I simply had to bring some of that natural charm inside. The acrylic and wood blocks, for example, that are in the living room are so chic and capture a moment frozen in time. The wood also complements the natural environment outside and creates rustic charm whilst the acrylic adds a really cool modern twist,’ says Hoppen.
Bedrooms are updated with luxurious quilted beds with elaborate head boards and sumptuous fabrics. The clockroom comes alive with a glamorous wallpaper.
She also uses velvets to add new dimensions to the space. The main challenge the designer faced was that she could not change the original build of the house. So she couldn’t add outdoor lighting and railings to the facade of the property. But that doesn’t stop Hoppen from adding her touch to the outdoor terrace.
On the whole, the winter chalet is a befittring tribute to the majestic scenery surrounding it. While the interiors are glamorous and timeless, they remain cosy, warm and inviting — just the way a winter gateway should be.
