Challenging context, Creating new Paradigms with Ar. Sameep Padora principal architect of Studio sP+a, Mumbai

Sameep Padora is a practising architect and principal of the design studio sP+a in Mumbai. He received his diploma in architecture from Academy of Architecture went on to study at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, and received his Masters from the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University in 2005.

His firm’s projects have received numerous international awards including The Architectural Review’s Emerging Architecture Award in London, the MARMOMACC International Award Architecture in Stone in Verona and the WAN 21 for 21 Award for 21 Emerging International Practices for the 21st century, earlier this year.

Most recently he has collaborated on a research project for the ‘Uneven Growth’ Tactical Urbanisms exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The studio has 25 architects and works on projects ranging from small scale urban interventions to large scale developments in India.

As a practice, they at sP+a believes that India’s vast breadth of socio-cultural environments require multifarious means of engaging with the country’s varying contexts. Type, Program, Design and Building processes are subservient to the immediacy of each project’s unique frame of reference.
The studio’s approach hence is to look to context as a repository of latent resources connecting production process and networks, appropriating techniques beyond their traditional use while allowing them to evolve and persist not just through preservation but more so through evolution.

The practice questions the nostalgia involved with the static ‘museumification’ of craft and tradition as well as the nature of what today comprises the ‘regional’ in contexts amplified by their place in global and regional networks. This attitude enables the practice to look at traditional project types, projecting their formal/ relational history within the paradigms of current socio-economic forces.

Sustainable design solutions with Morphogenesis

Morphogenesis is one of India’s leading award-winning Architecture and Urban Design practices with offices in Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi, India. Morphogenesis reinterprets India’s architectural roots and consistently employs passive design solutions for a unique contextual language. Its work encompasses a range of typologies across Architecture, Interiors and Landscape Urbanism.

Morphogenesis is the only firm in the WA100 list of the world’s largest Architecture firms which is Gender neutral, with over 50% women across all levels. With projects in 8 countries, 95 International and National Awards and 750 plus publications globally, it is the first Indian Firm to be awarded the Singapore Institute of Architects Getz Award for their vision and commitment in making a significant contribution in shaping the changing landscape of Asia. The firm’s work has been published in a Monograph by Images Publishing, Australia under their world-renowned Master Architect Series, a first for an Indian firm.

Established by Sonali and Manit Rastogi in 1996, Morphogenesis is globally recognized for its diverse work that encompasses a range of specialized practise areas – Master Planning, Residential, Commercial, Workplace, Institutional, Hospitality and Houses, through in-house integrated project delivery in Sustainability, Interiors, Landscape, Digital Technologies and Design Management.

Architecturally they celebrate identity and diversity versus visual homogeneity. They think of their buildings and cities as Bazaars, places of human interaction along with being places of human habitation. This ensures all their projects are unique, whilst responding to the client, climate, context and the end-users

The end-user always sits at the center of their design process in our approach to building smart environments. They consider mobility, security, outdoor comfort, technology, health and well-being, ease of facility management and disaster readiness to create spaces that work equally well for all users.

They understand that they are often working in an environment with limited resources hence, they deploy passive strategies by responding to the local climate and ecology and address comfort, safety, livability parameters and are mindful that projects remain economically viable and globally pertinent.

The belief in sustainability shapes all their projects. It is not treated as a layer of applied technology on building systems but forms the very basis of the design. Each project is conceived through a research-oriented approach to policy, planning, design, technology, passive and low energy design.

Sustainable Design with Architecture Brio

Architecture BRIO engages actively in the creation of contextually appropriate, sustainable design solutions within an increasingly changing world.

The founders of Architecture BRIO set up the studio in Mumbai in 2006. Over the years the studio has thrived with an energetic team of architects led by Shefali Balwani (C.E.P.T, India) and Robert Verrijt (TUDelft, the Netherlands).

The work of the studio addresses new ways of understanding the often contradictory interrelations between the city, architecture, landscape, and the world of interiors. Within this context, the work searches for a delicate balance between architecture as the act of disappearance, and creating characterful, responsive and experiential environments.

Over the past decade, the Dutch-Indian firm has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards, such as Archiprix, Europan 2008, and World Architecture Community Awards. In 2014, they were awarded the “Best Practice in India” at the Trends Excellence Awards 2014. The studio was selected amongst the “AD100“, the Architectural Digest India list of the most influential designers in India and South Asia in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The practice works with a thorough understanding of Architecture and its related fields. It seeks to develop the design as its core strength and primary focus. An energetic team of between 15 to 20 architects works intensively with engineers, consultants, designers and the client. In this multidisciplinary approach, it welcomes new insights that can lead to specific innovative solutions. It believes strongly in design as a process with an intensive dialogue. It uses models, both physical and virtual, as tools for communication between clients, engineers and architects. This encourages programmatic and engineering concepts to be fully integrated into the design right from the conception.

Architecture BRIO works on a broad range of projects both in the public and private realm. We enthral in jumping from the extreme of the tiny scale of an architectural dollhouse to designing masterplans or thinking on complex issues such as homelessness.

The studio thrives in this wide variety and scales of its projects. Regardless of a project’s scale, a common basis of the practice is its commitment to exemplary planning, design and execution. We approach a design brief in an open and explorative manner. We start by asking the right questions, before arriving at a common standpoint. This common point of departure then acts as a clear concept, which guides the design process.
